ISO 22000:2005 Certification

bvKarirana Estates Limited has been issued with ISO 22000: 2005 food safety management system (FSMS) certificate by Bureau Veritas Certification (BVC). The certificate is valid for three years with effect from 1st October 2014, subject to satisfactory annual reviews. The scope of the certification is the factory (processing and packaging of tea including Eden Tea). The FSMS gives our customers the assurance that the company is committed to the production and delivery of safe, quality products at all times.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)

HACCPHazard Analysis Critical Control Point or HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, chemical and biological hazards through prevention rather than finished product inspection. HACCP is used in the food industry to identify potential food safety hazards, so that key actions can be taken to reduce or eliminate the risk of the hazards being realized. In the end, the system guarantees a safe product to the consumer.

Karirana Estates Limited has maintained certification against the HACCP standard since January 2009 when its HACCP Food Safety Management System was audited for the first time by Bureau Veritas Certification (BVC) and found to be in accordance with the requirements of DS 3027 E:2002. Upon expiry of the first certificate in January 2011, the company invited Kenya Bureau of Standards who reaffirmed the HACCP Food Safety Management System was still compliant with the requirements of the above standard. Consequently the company was awarded a new certificate on 2nd May 2011 which will be valid for three years subject to continued compliance with the standard. We wish to assure all the consumers of Eden Tea and Karirana Tea of the management’s commitment to food safety in the processing and packaging of our Tea at all times.

Rainforest Alliance Certification

Rainforest Alliance

We are now in our fourth year since we became certified on Rainforest Alliance (RA) certification. This is a rigorous annual audit done on our factory, nucleus estate and some of our major outgrowers.  The objective of the standard is to encourage farms to analyze and consequently mitigate environmental and social risks caused by agriculture activities through a process that motivates continual improvement. The standard is based on the themes of environmental soundness, social equity and economic viability.

The RA mark assures our customers that we have not undertaken our production processes at the expense of our workers and at the detriment of the environment. We have also guaranteed that issues of occupational health risks have been looked into with the view of avoiding accidents and support the long term health of all workers exposed to risky activities. Our farm’s personnel is treated with respect and in compliance with main ILO conventions. We have also observed the integrity of our riparian strips and consciously engage in conserving our natural resources like forests, soil, water, and wildlife. These activities result to sustainable agriculture which guarantees returns to producers and consumers both in the short term and the long term.
